Much of the new technologies
unveiled at Nepcon 2007 this month centred around the high reliability
industries that now characterise the
predominant sectors in the UK such
as medical, aerospace and other high
reliability applications.
There was a number of new product
introductions, some from multinational
and some from home grown
companies, such as Europlacer, who
introduced the Iinneo, a new state-of-the-art placement machine that
can handle board sizes up to 1500 x
600mm, has a feeder capacity of 264
and can handle a full range of components
from 01005s and a maximum
component height of 35mm.
Another show stopper was the the
new Flashstream device programmer from BP Microsystems and demonstrated
on the Adaptsys stand that outstrips its nearest rival by more
than a factor of ten.
The SMART Group launched
their 'defect troubleshooting' guide
and their round table and seminars.
Chaired by Graham Naisbitt, they
were well attended with lively debate
on various industry related hot topics.
One of the highlights of day 2 was
the first annual "Bulls#### award,"
which was presented to Bob Willis by
Keith Bryant on behalf of the newly
formed chapter of the Smart Group
in South Africa. Bob and Keith have
recently returned from a road tour
around South Africa where they
presented a series of seminars on lead
free and other current issues.

 Speaking on the future of electronics manufacturing in the UK, Contax's
Mike Rapson said, "After several years of decline, the UK PCB assembly
market has stabilised, and is now showing encouraging signs of growth.
The high volume production that had migrated overseas has, in most
instances, remained offshore, with only a few market segments proving
an exception to this trend."
